Nandina domestica
Heavenly Bamboo

Qty $ 3.52 /packet

35 seeds
Nandina domestica Commonly called Heavenly Bamboo because of its resemblance to bamboo, Nandina can be used in virtually any part of the landscape and is especially useful in full or part sun, where the foliage color is superb. The new growth is often bronze to rose in color, becoming green with age. In the fall and winter, the growth takes on autumn leaf colors: red, orange, bronze and pink. The plant has added value in that it provides cut branches for use in floral arrangements year round. As the plant matures, late summer and early fall flowers may develop, eventually producing red berries. The flower clusters are quite large - 8" to 12" - and can be dried for arrangements.

Planted in the garden near night lights, Nandina will cast a beautiful silhouette....

Nandina is a very popular plant in Japanese gardens due to its leaf texture and color. In the Japanese home garden this plant will often be found near the front or back door, as it is considered the 'friendship plant'. Legend says that a Nandina beside the front door serves to listen to the worries of the head of the household. So if you don't mind speaking to plants, this one might work!

Evergreen to 5° F, slow to moderate growth, 5 - 8' in height.

Pachypodium geayi
Pachypodium geayi

Qty $ 4.83 /packet

10 seeds
Pachypodium geayi Pachypodium fans are small in number but they are an enthusiastic bunch. And they love their pachypodiums. Or should that be "pachypodia?" Anyhow, you can take a look at the Pachypodium geayi and see right away what all the fuss is about. I mean, what's not to love?

Actually, this species resembles Pachypodium lamerii (Madagascar Palm) for several of its younger growing years before its distinctions become more clear. The needle covered trunk is topped by leaves similar to P. lamerii but are thinner and this variety is white flowering and its branching tends to be more uniform and compact. Definitely a conversation piece, the seeds are rare and quite hard to find. Grow indoors unless you live in an arid/tropical region.

Pachypodium lamerii
Madagascar Palm

new

Qty $ 4.17 /packet

10 seeds
Pachypodium lamerii Not a true palm but a tropical succulent from the deserts of Madagascar.

When small, Pachypodium lamerii looks rather like a fat, spiky barrel cactus topped with a fringe of shiny green leaves. Its stem is armed with ferocious spines arranged in a regular configuration that seems to form a diamond-shaped patterns when viewed from a distance. Beware the fierce spines of Pachypodium lamerii! In time, the stem of Pachypodium lamerii elongates dramatically and, in a few years, it forms a long vertical trunk. At this point it more closely resembles a tree than a cactus - though its trunk still has those impressive spines so it needs to be handled with extreme care! While P. lamerii often develops a single-stemmed trunk, some individuals may develop branching trunks - even while they are still quite small. Given plenty of warmth, light, water and feeding, the plant grows fairly quickly and can attain a height of three or four feet in just a few years. At this size, it may also flower. Its flowers are pure white with a deep yellow centre and look very like the Frangipani (Plumeria rubra) flowers used to decorate the heads of Balinese dancing girls. Indeed, this is hardly surprising since Pachypodiums are related to Frangipanis. Both plants belong to the Apocynaceae family.
